Healing Doesn’t Have to Be Re-Traumatizing.

We’re excited to share that The Social Work Concierge, LLC will soon offer Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy — a powerful, evidence-based approach to treating trauma, anxiety, and other distressing life experiences.

Whether you’re a therapy client seeking emotional relief or a social work supervisee eager to expand your clinical skills, EMDR offers a new path forward — one rooted in deep healing, not just symptom management.

What Is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a structured, trauma-informed therapy that helps the brain reprocess distressing memories so they no longer cause intense emotional reactions. It’s based on the idea that trauma gets “stuck” in the brain and body, interfering with how we perceive ourselves, others, and the world.

Through EMDR, you can reprocess painful memories without having to retell the story in detail, making it a gentle but effective tool for survivors of:

  • Childhood trauma
  • Racial, gender-based, or religious trauma
  • Medical trauma
  • Grief and loss
  • Sexual assault
  • Intimate partner violence
  • Family and community violence
  • Burnout, moral injury, or compassion fatigue

How EMDR Works

EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (typically guided eye movements, tapping, or auditory tones) while you briefly focus on a specific traumatic memory or emotional disturbance. This stimulation mimics the natural process the brain uses during REM sleep to digest and store experiences.

As you engage in this process with your therapist, the emotional intensity of the memory often fades — and is replaced by new insights, beliefs, and feelings that reflect your resilience, growth, and worth.

Instead of thinking “I’m unsafe” or “I’m not enough,” EMDR helps your brain adopt new truths like “I am safe now” or “I deserve to heal.”

Why EMDR Matters for Clients and Clinicians

🖤 For Therapy Clients:

  • Healing without rehashing – EMDR allows you to address trauma without retelling the story in detail.
  • Faster relief – EMDR often produces meaningful results in fewer sessions than traditional talk therapy.
  • Holistic approach – EMDR targets emotional, cognitive, and somatic symptoms, addressing the trauma where it lives — in the body and mind.

🌟 For Social Work Supervisees:

  • Learn to integrate EMDR into culturally responsive care
  • Expand your clinical skillset with a neuroscience-backed modality
  • Gain insight into trauma-informed strategies that center nervous system regulation, not just insight or dialogue

If you’re pursuing advanced clinical licensure or preparing for trauma-specialized work, EMDR offers a transformative tool for your therapeutic toolbox.

We are currently in the final stages of certification and preparation. Once launched, EMDR therapy will be available to adult clients across Michigan via HIPAA-compliant virtual sessions.

Social work supervisees will also have the opportunity to discuss EMDR principles during clinical supervision, including:

  • Ethical use of EMDR in practice
  • The importance of cultural humility in trauma reprocessing work
